Katherine's Friend... and Patron, Famed Architect Alden B. Dow

Alden B. Dow, 1904-1983

The son of Herbert Henry Dow, founder of Dow Chemical Company, Alden B. Dow was a lifelong friend and business associate of Katherine Ardis Ux. As he grew to become one of America's most outstanding architects, this disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright also became a patron to Katherine's work with textiles.

Mr. Dow came to give numerous commissions to Katherine. Her pieces took a central place in many, if not most, of Mr. Dow's designs of the 1960s through the early 80s-- not only for homes, but for large public buildings. We hope to eventually have a catalog of these works by Katherine Ardis Ux, as commissioned by Alden B. Dow..

The Alden B. Dow Home & Studio

The Dow Home, in Midland, Michigan USA, is open for limited public tours. Several pieces of Katherine's work can be seen, as Mr. Dow himself enjoyed them in his personal residence and studio. The home is, according to Architectural Digest, "one of the two most beautiful
contemporary homes in America"-- along with Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater.

DOW • HOWELL • GILMORE • ASSOCIATES INC.

Although Alden B. Dow died in 1983, the Dow architectural firm that he founded in 1934, in Midland, Michigan USA, carries on to this day. His former associates, and newer members of the firm, all continue to draw their inspiration from his innovative designs, notions of quality, and a sensitivity toward nature-- all of which Katherine Ardis Ux so greatly admired in her friend and patron.
