ARDIS Publications (works by ARDIS Authors)

-- Thomas John Ardis, Austin, Texas USA

The following is a list of publications by ARDIS Authors. My apologies for the "roughness" of the format.

ARDIS, Marcia

[NOTE: Author Marcia ARDIS is the wife of William ARDIS Sept member Colby V. ARDIS Jr. She is founder of Literacy Links, which can be visited at www.literacylinks.com. That site states, in part...

Purpose and Goals:

About Marcia Ardis...
Marcia Ardis, Education Specialist, has worked in the field of public education for 25 years as an elementary teacher, university teacher, reading specialist, interim principal, Title 1 coordinator and family involvement coordinator. Marcia is the founder of Literacy Links. She is the author of two seminar handbooks and eight family literacy resource books.

Thousands of educators have experienced Marcia's seminars. Her materials on family literacy, parent involvement and developing "Home and School Connections" are used in districts across the country. [Book Review by Geoffrey W. McKim.
Review Grade: A

Upon first glance, the creators of Library Without Walls, an edited collection of sixteen essays from librarians and information professionals who are mostly affiliated with the University of Texas, appear to have undertaken a daunting, if not impossible task. They attempt to cover facets of the electronic library as diverse as electronic reference and document delivery, the technology of LANs (local area networks), the Internet, staff training, and library service marketing, while also providing a vision of "where libraries in general are going." Indeed, as the chapters about LANs and the Internet were written before the explosion of World Wide Web and Gopher-based information services, this is not a book in which to seek current technical information about actually implementing a digital information center.

However, where the book succeeds is in presenting the myriad issues that bear on the changing face of digital librarianship from a wide variety of perspectives, from the technical to the managerial. T. Renee Daulong's essay on outsourcing, for example, presents an issue often not discussed in the library context, yet is increasingly important as corporations and academic institutions alike downsize.

The book is strongest when it turns visionary. In particular, Dennis Trombatore's "Bringing Home the Bacon: Automating Library Services in a Marketing Context," about the marketing of and within a library or information center, is perhaps the most powerful and humane summary I've seen yet of such issues. Trombatore brings home the point that information centers in organizations must be responsive to, and attuned to, the mission of the organizations that they serve, and that marketing, rather than being mere superficial packaging, is not only a necessity for survival, but is an integral part of being a responsive information center. Barbara Denton and Marilyn Redmond of Sematech also present a flexible, collaborative, and organizationally savvy vision of the
"cybrarian."

Wilfred Grenfell was a medical missionary to Newfoundland and Labrador from
1892-1940. He was an author and a member of Royal National Mission to Deep Sea
Fishermen. Grenfell established the Labrador Medical Mission and the International
Grenfell Association.
Summary:
The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, ships' logs, notebooks, writings, speeches,
and legal and financial papers documenting Wilfred T. Grenfell's medical missionary work
in Labrador, particularly for the years 1930-1940. Also included are scattered papers of
the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen and the Grenfell Associations,
containing correspondence, minutes, financial records and reports (1893-1949). The small
amount of papers of Ann MacClanahan Grenfell, his wife, consist largely of
correspondence related to the Grenfell Association and two travel diaries (1924-1926).
Grenfell's correspondence, notebooks and diaries are a valuable source for Labrador and
Newfoundland history, as well as economic and social conditions between 1892, when he
committed himself to missionary work in Labrador, and his death in 1940. There are also
family papers relating to both the Grenfell and MacClanahan families. Providing an overall
view of Grenfell's life are twenty-one scrapbooks (1893-1939) and a collection of nearly
10,500 photographs of life in Newfoundland and Labrador (1890-1940), of various
missions and views of the Grenfell's travels to other parts of the world (1891-1932).
